Colonoscopy and polypectomy

Colonoscopy is one of the most accurate methods to assess the health of the large bowel (colon and rectum). This procedure requires a bowel preparation (drink to clean the bowel) which you will be asked to start the day before the procedure. The procedure is usually performed with the patient sedated. It involved the insertion of a flexible fibreoptic instrument into the rectum and colon via the anus. It is possible to remove bowel polyps using the colonoscope. It requires a short admission to hospital (‘day-stay’). It generally safe but there are some small risks which your surgeon will discuss with you. You will require an escort home after the procedure and you will not be able to drive for 24hours after the anaesthetic.
