Pelvic Exenteration

Pelvic exenteration is maximally invasive surgery for pelvic tumours, including locally advanced primary cancers and locally recurrent cancers of the rectum, and those of gynaecological origin (uterus, vagina, ovaries, perineum) and urological origin (bladder, prostate, seminal vesicles).

Pelvic exenteration can also be performed for soft tissue tumours, also known as sarcomas, arising from the pelvis and sacrum. Prior to surgery, the RPAH multidisciplinary team will discuss and outline a management plan suitable for each patient. The team comprises of surgeons (colorectal, orthopaedic, urology, gynae-oncology, vascular, and plastic), medical and radiation oncologists, radiologist, intensive care consultants, anaesthetists and pain team specialists, and allied health practitioners (physiotherapists, dieticians, psychologists, stomal therapists, occupational health and social workers).

This team approach has resulted in optimizing care and producing a high standard of clinical outcomes at RPAH. Over the last decade with multiple research projects, publications and book chapters, RPAH has become one of the world leaders in Pelvic Exenteration surgery.

We care for patients within Sydney and regional NSW, patients from interstate and overseas. In conjunction with our dedicated research teams at SOuRCe and the Institute of Academic Surgery, affiliation with the University of Sydney and the clinical team, we endeavor and continue to pursue advancements in surgical techniques for improved and best outcomes for our patients.
