Drainage of perianal abscess

Drainage of perianal abscess is a simple procedure to treat a perianal abscess. The procedure is usually performed under a quick general anaesthetic to allow the surgeon to assess the extent the infection and to make a little incision in the skin overlying the abscess. Once the pus is drained, the abscess cavity is usually washed out and dressed with simple wound packing.

After the procedure, the surgical wound will need some simple ongoing wound care. Your specialist will give you further instructions about wound care.
