LIFT Procedure

The LIFT procedure (also known as Ligation of Intersphincteric Fistula Tract) is a relatively new procedure used in the treatment of anal fistula. The aim of this procedure is to eradicate the tract that communicates between the inside of the anus and the skin around the anus while preserving the sphincter muscles that are important to maintain anal continence.

This procedure is usually performed after initial assessment with anorectal physiology (see Anorectal Physiology) to determine if your type of fistula is appropriate for the LIFT procedure. The procedure is generally performed as either a day procedure or as an overnight stay in the hospital. Other options to treat an anal fistula include:

  1. Fistulotomy

  2. Mucosal advancement flap

  3. Fistula plug procedure

  4. Cutting seton

Each procedure have their own pros and cons. Your specialist will be able to give you further information and discuss the best treatment for you.
